| Jumbo Squid Beach Themselves |
|
17-03-2005 |
At least 10 of the South American natives have been stranded in South Orange County since Saturday. The squid first appeared off the Southern California coast in January. Scientists at the Ocean Institute suspect they never left. Biologists say the squid normally feed out in the deep sea. Between 600 and 2000 feet would be where they find food.
They find it even more odd that they would land in a harbor where the water is shallow.

| Mexico's 'Fire Volcano' spews hot lava |
The volcano near the city of Colima, 430 miles northwest of Mexico City, unleashed a column of smoke and ash along with a flow of burning orange lava on Sept. 29. Since then, scientists have reported nearly daily eruptions from its 12,533-foot peak.

| Double volcanic eruption in Eastern Russia |
Located in the Russian Far East, the Kamchatka Peninsula is a landscape covered with volcanoes, part of the Pacific 'Ring of Fire'. Two stratovolcanoes, Kliuchevskoi and Shiveluch are currently erupting simultaneously.
This is NOT being reported in the US press despite the fact that Kamchatka is Alaska's next door neighbour!

Tropical cyclone Ingrid is gaining intensity as it heads slowly toward Australia's far north Queensland coast. Australia's Tropical Cyclone Warning center said the cyclone was drifting slowly west-northwest at about six kilometers (about 3 miles ) an hour and is expected to maintain that course over the next 24 hours.

| Seafloor earthquakes signal eruption off Vancouver Island |
A scientific SWAT team from Seattle is sailing this afternoon for a spot off the coast of Vancouver Island, where they suspect an underwater eruption is under way.
The past 7 days have seen an alarming increase in seismic activity on the Jean de Fuca tectonic plate near Vancouver Island. The Juan de Fuca plate is a tectonic time bomb capable of producing earthquakes and tsunamis on par with the disaster that struck the Indian Ocean in December.
"SOSUS has detected more than 3,800 earthquakes in the first 96 hrs of the swarm"
"One of the biggest problems in trying to predict when the next big one will hit is not knowing how fast the two plates are moving..."

Under water eruption in an area with no known volcanic activity means what exactly?
Has mother Nature found a new outlet to vent her frustration through?
Serious doubt has been cast on the ability of land based seismic monitors to accurately detect and pinpoint undersea quakes. |

St Helens West |
|
04 March 10:53AM (PST)
Helens webcam has ceased to update since 04 March - Just as things were getting very interesting!
Her camera might not be functioning but the seismic sensors tell a story all of their own!
"The network failure which began last Friday still continues. There is no operating network connection between the Mount St. Helens VolcanoCam and the rest of the world. A technician dispatched yesterday located the apparent failure location some thirty miles from the VolcanoCam in a remote area. More technicians are going there this morning with additional equipment to specifically identify the problem and attempt to fix it."
As at 13:48 PST, 08-03-2005 the Helen webcam is functional again.
